We are Martijn and Eveline Broeders and in 2019 we decided to retire from our day jobs, sold our home and move with our two dogs and two cats to the USA. For almost 25 years we have been traveling to the USA and we have visited almost all the States and seen a lot of places. We love the space, the nature, the way the Americans live and make the best of life and we wanted to be part of that.
While traveling through the USA we stayed in many different accommodations, but a Bed and Breakfast was our favorite.
So we decided that we wanted to start a Bed and Breakfast, only the question was where in the United States. It became Virginia because this state is rich with history, has both sea and mountains and the people are very friendly.
At the end of 2019, we traveled through Virginia for three weeks and visited over 30 homes for sale. However, when we arrived here in Clarksville and saw the Sunnyside, we knew we had found our place. A beautiful grand home, surrounded by so much nature, near Clarksville and the Lake, we knew we had to come here.
In April 2020 we bought Sunnyside just before Covid-19, we made a business plan and applied for a visa. Because of Covid everything took a lot longer than normal, but on September 24 2020 we were allowed to travel to the US and start with our adventure.
We have been working on the Sunnyside for two years, not because it was in a really rough state, but we wanted the Sunnyside to have a new and fresh start also. Moreover, we first needed a place for us to stay together with our dogs and cats before we could start with the makeover of the Sunnyside.
At the beginning of 2021 the contractor started on the addition to the outside kitchen, which is situated at the back of the home. It took him almost half a year to finish his work and then it took us another 6 weeks to finish and make “the Little Sunnyside” livable.
After one year working non-stop on the renovation of the Bed- and Breakfast we open on October 21, 2022.
With five beautiful and spacious rooms with private bath, a breakfast room and a gym we are looking forward to start a new chapter in our lives.
